The "Controversy" in the Missouri/Southern Baptist Conventions: What is it all about?

Note: This article is designed for individuals and churches involved in "denominational studies." Its purpose is to better inform those who find themselves asking "What was the controversy in the Southern Baptist Convention about?" "What are the differences between the SBC and the CBF?" and "Does it really matter which way my church goes?"

This article gives summary answers to these questions. For more extensive documentation on these and other questions regarding the SBC, CBF and "Mainstream" organizations, go to the publications section of this site, or contact us by phone, mail or our online feedback form.

The Cooperative Baptist Fellowship: Serious Questions For Serious Consideration

"There are serious questions that need to be answered regarding the CBF.  The organization’s willingness to accommodate blatant theological liberalism and its openness to those who hold extreme positions on such issues as abortion, pornography and homosexuality should cause grave concern.  For example, if one is “faithful” to verbally profess that “Jesus is Lord,” is he then “free” to deny His deity, His virgin birth, His sacrificial death or His substitutionary atonement? In the name of “inclusive language,” is it now acceptable to call God “Mother” or replace Jesus with “Christ-Sophia?” Has feminist theology so caught on that it is now acceptable to ordain our women as pastors?"

The CBF Circle of Friends: Religious Voices Advocate Homosexuality

"The gulf between the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship (CBF) and the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) continues to widen -- especially in the area of homosexuality.  While the SBC and SBC-related institutions have spoken clearly and stood firm regarding homosexual behavior, the CBF has not."
